The OM mantra is the most significant mantra we know. When we engage in the practices of mantra yoga, we encounter a variety of elements that help us connect with our inner self and enrich our spiritual journey. One of these elements is the sound “OM”. It is not just a simple sound, but a powerful tool that can take us to a deeper level of consciousness.
What is the OM mantra?
Let’s start our journey by looking at the root of the sound “OM”. “OM” is a sacred sound that has been used for centuries in Hinduism, Buddhism and other spiritual practices. It is considered the primordial sound of the universe and symbolizes creation, sustenance and dissolution. It consists of three components: A, U and M. These three sounds represent the trinity of divine powers, namely creation, preservation and transformation. In today’s science we know that our visible universe is made up of vibrating molecules. OM or AUM is therefore the reverberating sound that permeates all molecules in every part of the universe.
Moreover, the sound “OM” is closely related to the concept of sound and vibration. In Tantra, it is believed that the entire universe is a single vibration, and “OM” embodies this universal vibration in its purest form. When we chant “OM”, we align our own vibration with the vibration of the universe. This can lead to a feeling of oneness and connectedness with all that exists. It opens us up to the possibility of recognizing our true nature as divine beings and connecting with the divine energy within and around us.
OM unites body, mind and soul
When we look at the sound image of “OM”, we can recognize the connection between body, mind and soul. The “A” represents the sound produced in the front part of the mouth and represents the physical aspect of our being. The “U” is produced in the middle part of the mouth and symbolizes the mental state. Finally, the “M” is produced at the back of the mouth and represents the spiritual or transcendental aspect of our consciousness.
Sound and meditation
Another important aspect of the meaning of “OM” in mantra yoga is its role in meditation and activating our chakras. By chanting the sound “OM”, we can synchronize the vibration of our chakras. Chanting “OM” can help us achieve deep inner peace, improve concentration and connect with our higher self. In tantric practice, “OM” is often used as a starting point for exploring and developing our spiritual abilities.
We have a right and left side, male and female aspects within us. Through OM we bring our opposing aspects into balance. Mantras contain OM and we can also meditate only on the sound itself.

- U is Rajasic and associated with Vishnu

Conclusion
The OM mantra plays a particularly important role in mantra yoga, where we use sounds to transform our consciousness from gross desires and thoughts to higher, subtle themes. Since this sound forms the universe, we have a powerful tool in working with sounds in mantra yoga.
Recite the sound like AUM if you want to prolong it or to chant. For inner meditation with concentration, it is then an OM that you can use.
HARI OM!
